Job Description:

Responsible for claim technical and administrative leadership for coverage and excess claims ensuring compliance with company objectives, claim fundamentals, community goals and statutory regulations. Assigns new coverage, declaratory judgment and excess claims to examiners and provides direction and supervision for coverage, reserving, investigation, claim resolution and litigation management. Provides authorization for reserves and settlement consistent with established authority levels. Ensures compliance with reinsurance reporting. Interacts with underwriting to provide feedback on claim trends and issues that may affect the health of our products.

Essential Functions:

1.  Technical Leadership: Review and assignment of new coverage, declaratory judgments and excess claims to unit examiners and provide direction on coverage, investigation, reserving, liability and litigation management. Provide guidance on coverage, claim evaluation and conference cases when necessary providing authorization for reserve or settlements in excess of individual examiner’s authority. Participate in conference of cases with Chief Claims Officer when appropriate. Approve initial notices to reinsurers and ensure compliance with reinsurance reporting guidelines. Keep independent diary of those files with high exposure or complex. Facilitate the resolution of claims to achieve 100% closing ratio. Monitor trials and meditations.

2.  Administrative Leadership:  Participates in new hire interview process. Performs training, salary administration, performance reviews, professional development plans and related personnel matters. Employs Leadership with Heart principles to Coach, Celebrate and Correct everyday. 

. Claim Service: Respond to telephone or written inquiries from customers, retail agents, attorneys, claimants and policyholders concerning coverage questions, handling of claims, current status or related questions. Confer with underwriting team members in areas of product development and product health.  Provide input to underwriting teams when requested and provide information from claim experience on venues, statutes, case law, etc. that may impact the profitability of a product.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Attend workshops and leadership functions provided by the Company.
2.  Attends inter-departmental meetings and communicates with underwriting relative to product health.
3.  Participates in underwriting marketing events when requested.

Minimum Job Requirements:

JD plus legal experience preferred. 10+ years commercial claims handling with coverage and umbrella/excess experience. 3-5 years of supervisory or leadership experience handling coverage and umbrella/excess files desired.

Special Skills:

Knowledge of coverage application, claim handling and jurisdictional issues affecting claims handling. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Good organizational and time management skills. 
Strong analytical skills.Level of officership (Assistant VP or Second VP) dependent upon experience.
