Job Description

This role requires at least 4 days onsite per week. 

Responsible for claim technical and administrative leadership for Casualty/Liability claims ensuring compliance with company objectives, claim fundamentals, community goals and statutory regulations.  Assigns new claims to examiners and provides direction and supervision for coverage, reserving, investigation, claim resolution and litigation management. Provides authorization for reserves and settlement consistent with established authority levels.  Ensures compliance with reinsurance reporting.  Interacts with underwriting to provide feedback on claim trends and issues that may affect the health of our products.

1.  Administrative Leadership:  Leads a team of Casualty claims professionals. Participates in new hire interview process.  Performs training, salary administration, performance reviews, professional development plans and related personnel matters.  Employs Leadership with Heart principles to Coach, Celebrate and Correct every day.

2.  Technical Leadership: Review and assignment of new Casualty claims to unit examiners and provide direction on coverage, investigation, reserving, and litigation management.   Provide guidance on Casualty claim evaluation and conference cases when necessary providing authorization for reserve or settlements in excess of individual examiner’s authority. Review and approve all full or partial claim denials. Participate in conference of cases with Chief Claims Officer when appropriate.  Review and escalate initial notices to reinsurers and ensure compliance with reinsurance reporting guidelines.  Keep independent diary of those files with high exposure or complex issues. Facilitate the resolution of Casualty claims to achieve 100% closing ratio. Monitor trials and mediations.

3. Claim Service: Respond to telephone or written inquiries from customers, retail agents, attorneys, policyholders concerning coverage questions, handling of Casualty claims, current status or related questions. Confer with underwriting team members in areas of product development and product health.  Provide  input to underwriting teams when requested and provide information from Casualty claim experience on venues, statutes, case law, etc. that may impact the profitability of a product.

  1. Attend workshops and leadership functions provided by the Company.
  2. Attends inter-departmental meetings and communicates with underwriting relative to product health.
  3. Participates in underwriting marketing events when requested.

Specific Skills:

Knowledge of coverage application, claim handling and jurisdictional issues affecting Casualty/Liability claims handling. Experience with Liquor/Dramshop liability is a plus. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Good organizational and time management skills. Strong analytical skills.

Minimum Job Requirements:

College Degree required. 10+ years of commercial claims handling experience is required. Experience handling Casualty claims tendered under general liability polices is preferred.
  Previous supervisory or leadership experience desired. Advanced degree and/or Juris Doctorate (JD) is a plus, but not required.
