Your Role: As head of the property claims department, you will report directly to the chief claims officer and lead a team of property claim leaders and claims professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional service and technical excellence across all property lines. You will oversee claim assignments, guide complex resolution strategies and ensure consistency in reserving and coverage decisions through close collaboration with internal partners, including coverage and SIU. Your leadership will focus on coaching, performance development and accountability while fostering a culture of empathy and excellence. In addition, you will play an important role in product development by working with underwriting to share insights on trends, jurisdictional challenges and regulatory impacts that influence product performance and profitability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Oversee hiring, training, performance reviews, salary administration and professional development plans while applying Leadership with Heart principles to coach, celebrate and correct every day

  • Claims oversight: Assign and review new property claims, providing guidance on coverage, investigation, reserve and settlement strategies, including authorization of reserves and settlements beyond examiner authority

  • Decision-making: Review and approve all claim denials and participate in file conferences with senior leadership as needed

  • Reinsurance compliance: Escalate initial notices to reinsurers for approval and ensure adherence to reporting requirements

  • Service excellence: Respond to inquiries from customers, brokers, attorneys and policyholders while ensuring timely and accurate communication

  • Regulatory response: Prepare responses to state DOI consumer complaints regarding property claims handling

  • Collaboration: Partner with underwriting leaders to share claim insights related to product development, jurisdictional impacts, statutes, case law and emerging trends

  • Knowledge sharing: Present property-related topics to underwriting teams and contribute to cross-departmental meetings and workshops

What You’ll Bring:

  • Leadership: Ability to inspire, coach and hold teams accountable while fostering individual growth

  • Property expertise: Deep knowledge of coverage application, claim handling and jurisdictional issues affecting outcomes

  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration and relationship building across stakeholders

  • Judgment: Strategic and decisive decision-making to drive effective claim resolution

  • Adaptability: Flexible leadership style that tailors coaching and oversight to team member strengths and needs

Qualifications:

  • Education: College degree or equivalent industry designations or experience

  • Experience: More than 10 years of commercial claims handling and 7 to 10 years of supervisory or leadership experience

  • Industry knowledge: Completion of or progress toward professional designations such as CPCU, AEI or AIC preferred
