Your Role: As a tax specialist, you will support the accounting team with state filings, premium taxes and general accounting functions. You’ll assist with the preparation, filing and payment of monthly, quarterly and annual tax returns across 50 states plus D.C. for multiple insurance companies. You’ll also maintain databases of tax deadlines and documentation, organize accounting archives, review state tax laws and communicate directly with state tax representatives when needed. This role provides the opportunity to strengthen your expertise in tax compliance and accounting processes while contributing to the smooth operations of the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Database management: Maintain accurate records of all state filing and tax return deadlines, payments and documentation

  • Tax preparation: Review reports and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual premium tax returns

  • Compliance oversight: Ensure timely and accurate filing and payment of all premium tax returns and fees

  • Recordkeeping: Organize and archive tax returns, filings and supporting documentation

  • General accounting: Review of general ledger accounts for accuracy and maintain accounts payable records for month-end closing

  • Accrual preparation: Assist with insurance premium tax, state filing fees and guaranty fund accruals

  • Regulatory knowledge: Stay current with individual state premium tax laws and requirements

  • Customer service: Respond promptly to inquiries from state tax representatives

  • Audit support: Provide requested information for external audits and assist with reporting needs

  • Process improvement: Suggest efficiency enhancements for current processes and contribute to new projects

What You’ll Bring:

  • Organizational skills: Strong attention to detail, time management and ability to prioritize multiple tasks

  • Technical skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word and Outlook

  • Communication skills: Clear oral and written communication for internal and external stakeholders

  • Analytical skills: Ability to interpret data, monitor reports and ensure accuracy in filings

  • Adaptability: Willingness to work overtime and weekends during tax season (January through April)

  • Team mindset: Collaborative approach with the ability to also work independently

Qualifications:

  • Education: Two-year college degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience: Prior use of Microsoft Office; experience in accounting, tax or related administrative functions preferred

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with accounting processes, general math skills and database organization

  • Professional development: Openness to learning tools such as Premium Pro, Allocator and other accounting systems
